Preparation :

  1. Vermicomposting is  done in various containers or beds, such as wooden bins, plastic containers or specially designed vermicomposting beds
  2. Bedding material is used to create a comfortable environment for the earthworms and provides carbon-rich content for the composting process
  3. Organic waste materials are added to the bedding. These materials can include kitchen scraps (vegetable and fruit peels, coffee grounds, eggshells), garden waste (leaves, grass clippings) and other organic matter
  4. Red worms (Eisenia fetida) are introduced to the bedding and organic waste
  5. Organic waste is periodically added to the vermicompost system. Moisture, temperature & pH levels are continuously monitored.
  6. Vermicompost is ready for harvest when it appears dark and crumbly. At this stage, the worms are separated from the compost and shifted to the fresh bedding and food.
  7. The harvested vermicompost can be mixed with the soil, used as a top dressing or added to potting mixes to improve soil fertility
